L3Harris to Provide Advanced Technology for Korean Geostationary Weather Satellite

L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) has received a contract from LIG Nex1 to provide the next-generation imaging payload for the Korea Meteorological Administration’s (KMA) geostationary weather satellite, which will improve the accuracy and timeliness of forecasting for the Korean Peninsula.

The main payload for the Geostationary Earth Orbit Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-5 (GEO-KOMPSAT-5) will be the new 18-channel L3Harris GEO-KOMPSAT Meteorological Imager, which includes two channels for improved water vapor measurement and enhanced resolution.

“L3Harris is committed to providing on-orbit technology that advances global weather capabilities, including the enhanced tracking and characterization of tropical cyclones, extreme precipitation events and wildfires,” said Jeff Hanke, President, Space Systems, Space and Mission Systems, L3Harris. “Detecting potentially severe storms earlier and tracking them in greater detail will significantly enhance the safety and well-being of communities.”

This contract continues L3Harris’ support of the Republic of Korea and builds on the company’s 60-year heritage of developing weather satellite capabilities. L3Harris delivered the Advanced Meteorological Imager for KMA’s current geostationary weather satellite, GEO-KOMPSAT-2A, and supported the meteorological imager aboard its predecessor, the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite.

L3Harris’ imaging technology is currently supporting other customers around the globe, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s GeoXO satellite system and the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Himawari-10 satellite.
