GE Aerospace and the WZL-2 Sign MoU for F110 MRO Support

GE Aerospace (NYSE:GE) and the Military Aviation Works (Wojskowe Zaklady Lotnicze NR 2 S.A. or WZL-2) in Warsaw signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore opportunities for the development of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services capabilities and depot level maintenance for the F110-GE-129 engine that powers Boeing’s F-15EX fighter jet. The MOU was signed by Jakub Gazda, Chief Executive Officer, WZL-2, Zbigniew Matuszczak, Member of the Management Board and Technical Director, WZL-2, and Sean Keith, GE Aerospace F110 Product Director at a ceremony in Warsaw.  

“The F110 engine is a proven fighter jet engine with more than 40 years of continuous production and innovation,” said Sean Keith, F110 Product Director at GE Aerospace. “As the sole engine qualified for Boeing’s F-15 Advanced Eagle family of aircraft, including the F-15EX, the F110-GE-129 engine is designed for ease of maintenance with Shop Replacement Units (SRUs). The SRUs enable 90% of maintenance to be performed in country, reducing aircraft downtime and lowering lifecycle costs. This MOU with WZL-2 will allow us to identify opportunities to support Poland’s maintenance needs for the F110 engine and strengthen local capabilities.” 

Under the MOU, GE Aerospace and WZL-2 will assess requirements needed to support intermediate and depot-level maintenance, including tooling, machining, training, and test cell modifications necessary for F110-GE-129 engine maintenance.  

Last month, GE Aerospace signed an MOU with the Military University of Technology (Wojskowa Akademia Techniczna or WAT) in Warsaw to identify opportunities to expand engine training and education to the F110-GE-129 engine that powers Boeing’s F-15EX fighter jet and explore the establishment of an Aircraft Engine Additive Manufacturing Laboratory in WAT. If WAT and GE Aerospace decide to move forward, GE Aerospace will provide course material and training on the F110-GE-129 engine to WAT and work together to develop training curriculum on the engine.  

The F110-GE-129 engine, which offers the highest thrust at 29,500 pounds, is the only engine that is fully integrated into the F-15EX Eagle II. This engine is in production and flying with the US Air Force’s F-15EX fleet today.  

The F110 engine recently celebrated 40 years of continuous production. With more than 11 million flight hours under wing and the most thrust in its class, the F110 engine powers the F-15 and F-16 for the U.S. military and 16 allied nations as well as Türkiye’s fifth generation fighter, the KAAN. Over the last four decades, the F110 engine has been improved—with more than 90 percent of the parts being upgraded to further enhance performance, readiness, and lifecycle costs. And when it comes to maintenance, 90 percent can be performed on wing or at an on-site facility, reducing aircraft downtime and improving readiness.
