VÆRIDION, an all-electric aircraft manufacturer, and Molicel, a leader in high-performance battery technology, announced today a strategic partnership to jointly select and qualify a high-energy, aviation-grade battery cell for the certification of VÆRIDION’s Microliner. The collaboration represents a critical milestone on VÆRIDION’s path toward certification-ready prototype flights in 2027 and commercial entry into service in 2030, supporting the company’s mission to enable clean, efficient regional air mobility.
The Microliner is a 100% electric aircraft designed for short-haul regional routes. Its advanced architecture is defined by VÆRIDION’s wing-integrated battery system, in which advanced battery packs are mounted directly into the wing to power the aircraft’s electric propulsion system.
As part of its proprietary technology, VÆRIDION has developed the battery system above the cell level, including thermal control, mechanical protection, monitoring layers, and system safety architecture—each developed to meet rigorous aviation-grade certification requirements. Within this system-level architecture, the performance characteristics of the battery cells are fundamental. Cell behaviour directly impacts the Microliner’s targets for weight optimization, flight range, fast charging capability, and operational safety.

Molicel brings deep expertise in high-performance lithium-ion technology, with cells known for ultra-high-power capability, high energy density, and unmatched quality standards. Its technology has already flown in aerospace programs, demonstrating suitability for stringent qualification and safety standards. The partnership will draw on both companies’ deep testing and validation expertise to ensure the selected cell aligns with the Microliner’s battery system architecture and supports its performance, certification, and safety targets.
“Molicel’s manufacturing maturity, quality discipline, and demonstrated capacity to support aviation programs establishes the level of rigor required to qualify a battery cell for electric aviation,” said Evan O’Connor, Head of R&D at VÆRIDION. “This partnership underpins the battery foundation of the VÆRIDION Microliner and supports our progress toward first flight and certification before the end of the decade.”
“We are proud to join forces with VÆRIDION as they advance the commercialization of their all electric aircraft. Aviation is a sector where safety and global security are paramount, and Molicel remains steadfast in our commitment to delivering high performance lithium ion cells manufactured to the highest standards of quality. We believe our technology will help accelerate the evolution of electric aviation, much as recent breakthroughs have transformed the landscape of electric ground transportation.” said Casey Shiue, President at Molicel.
Earlier this year, VÆRIDION announced the securing of a state-of-the-art battery manufacturing facility at Oberpfaffenhofen Airport (OBF / EDMO), which will serve as both the company’s production hangar and propulsion battery system test house. The site will play a central role as VÆRIDION advances toward first flight in 2027 and the EASA and subsequent FAA type certification processes.
The Microliner’s electric propulsion architecture, featuring wing-integrated battery system and multi-engine, single-propeller configuration with direct-drive transmission, was previously assessed by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) as part of a Pre-Application Contract concluded in 2024.
