  • A state-of-the-art training facility with operational, tactical and full crew training capabilities to enable advanced mission readiness

CAE GmbH has delivered a fully equipped NH90 training centre to the German Navy during an official ceremony at the facility.

Members of the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), Naval Command, Naval Support Command and local government officials joined the event to celebrate the hand-over and start of operations at the state-of-the-art training centre supporting naval aviators and crew.

The advanced training facility includes multiple simulators for crew training for the NH90 NTH Sea Lion naval transport helicopter:

An Operational Flight Trainer (OFT) for training pilots and co-pilots with the highest qualification level for flight simulators,
Two Operational Tactics Trainers for the Tactical Coordinator (TACCO) and the rear crew that are networked with the OFT,
Two cockpit procedure trainers for pilots and TACCO to conduct targeted practice of individual procedures

In addition to designing and manufacturing the trainers, CAE was also responsible for planning and implementing the facility.

"CAE is pleased to make another important contribution to the operational readiness of the German Navy, delivering the NH90 NTH Sea Lion Training Centre," said Martin Seger, Managing Director of CAE GmbH. "This complete training solution demonstrates our commitment to the mission readiness of German Armed Forces, which we have proudly supported for over 60 years.”

CAE was awarded a contract with the NSPA to supply the simulators on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany in November 2019. Working through the challenges of the pandemic and geopolitical uncertainties, the training centre demonstrates CAE’s commitment to supporting the mission readiness of allied defence forces globally.

"We have had to wait a long time for the delivery of the simulator and it has taken a lot of effort and commitment - now we are happy to have this state-of-the-art training device available,” said Naval Aviation commanding officer, Captain Broder Nielsen. “We are celebrating today, but at the same time we must continue to press ahead with the commissioning of the simulator for the Sea Tiger, which will be delivered to the naval aviators in 2025!"

“Today marks the successful outcome of four years of excellent cooperation between the German Navy, the industry (CAE) and NSPA. This has brought us to the Ready For Training date where we have a fully functioning Flight Simulator System, which will undoubtedly be an asset to Germany for the foreseeable future”, said Mr Daniele Cucchi, Programme Manager, Aviation Support Programme Office.

CAE’s support of the German Navy began in 1979, with the development and delivery of the Mk41 Sea King simulator, providing the training capabilities for naval aviators. Training has expanded to include high-fidelity simulators for training on the Mk88A Sea Lynx onboard helicopter, the P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft, and now the NH90 NTH Sea Lion multi-role helicopter.
