Distributed Fibre Optics Sensing Market Valued at $1.4Bn in 2019

Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing is a sensing technology that enables continuous, real-time measurements along the length of the fibre optic cable. Unlike the traditional sensors that depend on the discrete sensors, distributed sensing technology utilizes the optical fibre as a sensing element without the help of any additional transducers in the optical path. Distributed sensors are usually used for acquiring temperature, strain and acoustic data. These sensors detect, locate, classify multiple threats in real-time along with the full extent of the pipeline. The application of distributed fibre optic sensors in various fields such as oil and gas, power and utility and civil engineering provides the enormous assistance in curbing the real-world catastrophes in their respective fields. From a regional segmentation perspective, North America has seen the highest revenue during the year 2017 which is attributed for the growing number of technological advancements and continual development of fracking techniques in the region which is boosting the sales in the region. On the other hand, the Asia-pacific region has reported the highest growth average during the forecast period. The reason is attributed to the increase in the application of distributed fibre optics in the thriving industrial sector and the growing scope of its application in the region.

The analyst commented "The main source of growth within the DFOS market over the forecast period will be in the Submarket for Oil & Gas. Although the volatility in oil and gas prices, such as the recent drop to $40 a barrel may adversely affect the DFOS Submarket for Oil & Gas in the short term, Visiongain believes that overall oil prices will be stable over the forecast period as a whole and spending on DFOS products relating to Upstream Oil & Gas will retain its ability for growth. Furthermore, spending in this Submarket is even more probable considering that DFOS technology represents an interesting cost-cutting opportunity for the market, and as such shall be nonetheless pursued, even when the oil and gas industry suffers significant losses of global revenue. Whilst the early history of DFOS solutions was marred by the initial failures of DTS systems due to material degradation; the energy industry now has full confidence and trust in DFOS products for well monitoring and VSP."

Leading companies featured in the report who are developing DFOS technologies include QinetiQ, Baker Hughes, CGG, Fotech Solutions, NKT Photonics, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Future Fibre Technologies Ltd, Southwest Microwave, Magal Security Systems, Silixa Ltd
