Teledyne FLIR Defense Announces Major Radar Capability Upgrades Boosting Speed, Accuracy and Drone Detection

  • New software enhancements for Ranger R8-3DX and R20SS radars include faster scanning, expanded elevation coverage, and AI target classification for superior threat assessment during critical missions
  • Upgrades also deliver cost-effective solution for low-speed drone threats

Teledyne FLIR Defense today announced significant software enhancements to its advanced Ranger® radar systems, delivering faster, earlier, and more accurate detection capabilities for critical missions worldwide. The upgrades apply to the Ranger R8-3DX and Ranger R20SS platforms, widely deployed for border security, force protection, and counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) operations.

The latest improvements include Fast Scan technology, enabling 360-degree coverage at up to 60 RPM for the R8-3DX and 30 RPM for the R20SS, a dramatic increase from the previous scan rates of 8 degrees per second. This advancement provides earlier threat warnings, higher refresh rates, and improved tracking accuracy – all of which allow operators to detect and assess targets more reliably, even at high speeds, for military or civil operations.

The R8-3DX also now offers up to 20% greater elevation coverage, reducing the “cone of silence” above the radar and enhancing detection of high-altitude threats such as drones. Combined with proprietary, patented algorithms, these upgrades maintain exceptional sensitivity to low-speed targets – down to 0.1 m/s radial velocity – while minimizing false alarms and reducing operator workload. In addition, AI-enabled radar processing delivers market-leading target classification accuracy, critical to users tasked with defeating real threats.

“These enhancements represent a major leap forward in radar performance,” said Pierre Poitevin, vice president of Radar Systems at Teledyne FLIR Defense. “By increasing scan speed and vertical coverage without sacrificing accuracy, we’re giving customers the confidence and capability they need to detect targets faster.

“Our patented Fast Scan technology means low-speed threats will not go undetected, making it a cost-effective solution for applications such as prison air security, where users need to quickly detect drone drop-points, so they can intercept delivery,” Poitevin added.
