Greece Orders a 4th FDI Frigate to Naval Group

On 14 November 2025, Major General Ioannis Bouras, General Director of the Hellenic General Directorate of Defense Investments and Armaments (GDDIA), and Pierre Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group, signed the contract for the construction of an additional defence and intervention frigate (FDI) for the Hellenic Navy.

This contract covers the acquisition of a fourth FDI frigate and its maintenance, with the extension of additional capabilities across the entire FDI HN fleet. This fourth FDI is a continuation of the FDI HN programme launched in 2022, which provides for the supply of three FDI frigates + one optional, with an ambitious industrial cooperation plan with Greece. The first three frigates are currently under construction, with the first one due to be delivered to the Hellenic Navy at the end of 2025.

"We are very honoured by Greece's order for this fourth FDI frigate. With the first three already at an advanced stage of production, this order is a mark of confidence and confirmation of the Hellenic Navy's satisfaction with these first-rank vessels. We will continue to deploy our expertise in the service of the Hellenic Navy's sovereignty and naval superiority," said Pierre Eric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group.

The FDI, a high-intensity combat-ready ship on all seas of the globe
The FDI is a first-rank frigate with proven capabilities in all areas of combat: anti-aircraft, anti-submarine, anti-surface and asymmetric.

Scalable and versatile, it uncompromisingly combines all the functions enabling it to manage, either independently or as part of a fleet, current and emerging threats such as latest-generation submarines, supersonic missiles, cyberattacks and multifaceted asymmetric threats. To this end, it is equipped with advanced digital and data processing technologies. Capable of operating in all theatres of action and responding to the evolving constraints of naval warfare, the FDI is a major asset for leading navies.

Its compact layout and unique design make it perfectly suited to different environments and rough seas around the world (cold and warm waters, and archipelagic environments in particular). This ability to sail on the high seas and in heavy seas was demonstrated during Admiral Ronarc'h's first sea trials, but also during her trip to her first port of call in Lisbon, where the crew was able to observe the ship's performance in sea state 7 in the Atlantic Ocean.

In addition, the design and automated systems integrated on board the FDI allow the ship to be operated with a small crew. It offers a high level of maintainability, reducing maintenance times and optimising operational availability.

Furthermore, like all our ships and systems, the FDI is designed and built to NATO standards, ensuring interoperability and connectivity between allied navies.
