Square Peg Communications Releases Next Generation Mobile Satellite Tester

Single-box solution initially supports testing of Inmarsat BGAN, FleetBroadband, SwiftBroadband and European Aviation Network satellite services

Square Peg Communications Inc. today announced that it is shipping its next generation Physical Layer Tester platform, the PLT-M.  The new tester employs Square Peg’s proven Multi-Channel Platform (MCP) Channel Unit and builds on the company’s heritage of over 20 years of experience in mobile satellite test systems.

The Square Peg Physical Layer Testers (PLTs) are software-defined instruments that allow a range of applications to be run on a common hardware platform.  A PLT can replace multiple conventional test instruments and can employ detailed knowledge of the air interface under test to provide tailored capabilities and insightful analysis facilities.

PLTs are used extensively for equipment development, type approval, and production test of mobile satellite terminals.  Tests can be automated and the results presented in a common format, minimizing the time required to prepare test reports.

The PLT-M is a single-box solution incorporating a multi-channel modem, RF interfaces with programmable Tx and Rx attenuators, and a Windows-based controller.  It is available with L-band, S-band or IF interfaces and is readily adapted to other frequencies and applications.

The BMCP (BGAN Physical Layer Tester on MCP) application is the first to be made available on the PLT-M.  It supports the testing and qualification of both User Terminal (UT) and Radio Access Node (RAN) implementations for the Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network.  It includes a comprehensive satellite channel simulator, which enables the introduction of impairments into the transmitted signal, and signal analysis software, which allows the performance of the transmitter under test to be automatically compared with system specifications.  BMCP can be used in conjunction with a network emulator to simulate the end-to-end satellite network for protocol stack or application testing.

The BMCP provides essentially the same functionality as the original BPLT, in a smaller, more robust, more flexible and easier to configure package.  Its enhanced processing capabilities provide scalability for higher data rate air interfaces.  The BMCP application is approved by Inmarsat for UT type approval and is backwards compatible with all BGAN test tools including the BGAN Protocol Tester (BPT), BGAN Network Emulator (BNE), BGAN Application Tester (BAT) and the physical layer test suite (UTMTRs).  It retains the familiar BPLT GUI, minimizing the learning curve for existing users.

“Our customers have told us how much they value the capabilities of our Physical Layer Tester product line.  With the introduction of this new platform, we will be able to continue to evolve these capabilities as our customers move to higher data rates and more advanced modulation and coding techniques,” said Michael Gertsman, President of Square Peg.

“Having completed qualification testing of the BMCP, we are moving on to implementing testers for other services such as IsatData Pro, and look forward to working with our customers to bring the capabilities of the PLT-M to bear on other applications” concluded Gertsman.
