(July 14, 2010) -- General Sir Kevin O'Donoghue, the Chief of Defence Materiel, has awarded a Certificate of Commendation to QinetiQ for its part in the Chinook Mk3 Reversion programme. The award recognised the outstanding success of the Defence Equipment & Support and Industry Team that delivered the first Chinook Mk3 aircraft to service in November 2009, 23 months after contract award and two years ahead of previous plans to field the helicopters. General O'Donoghue commented that this remarkable achievement demonstrates the very best in teamwork and partnership and noted that the Chinook Force is key to the success of United Kingdom Military operations in Afghanistan and the vital uplift that the delivery of these aircraft brings is even more critical given the loss of two Chinook on operations in 2009.
On Sunday 11th July, BBC2 also aired a one hour documentary entitled "Britain's Secret Engineers", dedicated to QinetiQ as part of the BBC's "How to Build" series. Filmed over the first few months of 2010, the BBC was given access to various projects across QinetiQ including the Chinook Mk3 reversion programme at Boscombe Down; the development of ground robots both in Farnborough and in the US; and how QinetiQ is applying its expertise in stealth from across the business to assist the wind generation industry develop radar-stealthy wind turbines.
"Many of the things we work on are mission critical, they save lives, they protect our troops - it's a big responsibility to carry," stated Leo Quinn, QinetiQ's CEO in recognising the dedication and professionalism of the people working on these aircraft and the wider importance of the work QinetiQ does in delivering solutions.
