(June 17, 2008) -- Figures released today (17 June 2008) by the UK Trade & Investment's Defence and Security Organisation reveal that 2007 saw the UK become the world's leader in defence exports, with a record GBP10 billion (US$19 billion) of new business and a 33 per cent market share.Ian Godden, Chief Executive of the Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC), said
"We are proud that the UK defence industry remains a world leader. This success is built on investment made in the 1990s and, if we are to continue to reap these economic benefits in the future, this investment will need to be maintained.
"The industry, in addition to its key role as a provider of the best equipment and services for the UK Armed Forces, provides high-value, high-technology employment across the regions of Britain. We lead the way in employing apprentices and generating spin-offs such as satellite navigation and flat screen televisions to make civilian life better too."
Rees Ward, Director General of the Defence Manufacturers Association (DMA), jointly commented:
"This is excellent news and confirms that the UK defence industry continues to produce high-quality, battle-proven products and services that remain competitive.
"Industry, from primes to small and medium-sized enterprises, can take pride in these results. This success is well-founded on partnering relationships between industry and Government departments. It is vital that we maintain relationships with key markets and we look forward to working with UKTI DSO and their new Head, Richard Paniguian, to build on this historic success."
