European airlines applaud interim EU/US agreement on transfer of passenger data(06.10.2006) -- The Association of European Airlines has announced it "warmly welcomes" the successful completion of the talks between the EU and the US Administration. The Agreement signed today will enable the passenger data to continue to be transferred to the US in the same way as under the previous, 2004 agreement, which had been voided by the European Court of Justice in May of this year for technical reasons.
AEA Secretary General Ulrich Schulte-Strathaus commented: "The agreement signed today will put an end to a period of uncertainty that was highly uncomfortable both for European carriers and their passengers. Even though our negotiators had assured us that we could continue transferring the passenger data in our reservation systems to the US, we were all aware that this period could not be indefinitely extended."

The US Administration will continue to process the data in accordance with the original agreement signed in 2004.
This interim Agreement will have to be approved by the EU Council, which should happen soon.
