( NORTHAMPTON, MA, August 8, 2006 ) - The Spanish Navy, through Spanish shipbuilder Navantia announced the selection of Kollmorgen Electro-Optical and its Italian subsidiary, Calzoni Srl, to provide periscopes and optronic imaging systems and hoistable masts for the Spanish Armada's new S-80 submarines. Kollmorgen and Calzoni will work in cooperation with Spanish industry partner INDRA to jointly develop and build the equipment for the 4 Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) diesel submarines. Michael Wall, president of Kollmorgen Electro-Optical, stated: "The advanced submarine imaging systems represent the state of the art in design and performance and will provide the Spanish fleet with 24 hour all-weather capability. The hoisting masts are based on the highly successful Universal Modular Mast utilized by the US Navy on the Virginia class submarine."
Kollmorgen was first to develop and deploy non-hull penetrating optronic imaging systems and remains the industry leader. Calzoni, located in Bologna, Italy will provide state of the art hoistable masts which raise and lower submarine sensors including radar, electronic surveillance and communication antennae, periscopes and optronic sensors.
