American Science and Engineering Receives Order for Eight ZBVs for $6.4M from U.S. Government

ZBVs to be Configured for Harsh Environment Operation for Counterterrorism Application ( BILLERICA, Mass., July 31, 2006 ) - American Science and Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASEI) (AS&E(R)), a leader in X-ray detection technology, announced today the receipt of an order from a U.S. Government agency for eight Z(R) Backscatter Vans(TM) (ZBV(TM)), totaling $6.4 million. The ZBVs will be equipped with AS&E's Radioactive Threat Detection (RTD) technology to detect nuclear devices and dirty bombs hidden in vehicles or containers and will be configured for harsh environment operation. "We are working with this U.S. Government agency to provide additional ZBV units to their fleet," said Anthony R. Fabiano, President and CEO of AS&E. "They require the flexibility to operate equipment in harsh environmental conditions, and the ZBV's reliability and versatility has proven to meet their needs. The Radioactive Threat Detection capability in combination with Z(R) Backscatter(TM) technology provides the most effective solution to screen for nuclear threats, car bombs, and roadside explosives." A breakthrough in X-ray detection technology, AS&E's Z Backscatter Van is a low-cost, highly mobile screening system built into a commercially available delivery van. The ZBV allows for immediate deployment in response to security threats, and its high throughput capability facilitates rapid inspections. The system's unique "drive-by" capability allows one or two operators to conduct X-ray imaging while the ZBV drives past suspect vehicles and objects. For personnel safety in dangerous environments, a remote console is available for operating the system in stationary mode from a distance of up to 500 meters.
