AS&E Receives ZBV Orders for $1.9M from the APAC Region

(BILLERICA, Mass., July 10, 2006) -- Systems to be used for Customs, Police, and Protection of High-Level Government Officials. American Science and Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASEI) (AS&E(R)), a leader in X-ray detection technology, announced today the receipt of orders from two countries in the Asia Pacific region for its Z(R) Backscatter Vans(TM) (ZBV), totaling $1.9 million. "Our APAC clients required a reliable and effective tool to strengthen their high-threat security -- and they chose the ZBV," said Anthony R. Fabiano, President and CEO of AS&E. "The ZBV has capabilities well beyond other conventional systems; its drive-by feature allows quick deployment to inspect vehicles and other objects for explosive threats and contraband. Additionally, its versatility will accommodate our clients' diverse security needs, including customs and police applications, as well as protecting high-level government officials." A breakthrough in X-ray detection technology, AS&E's Z Backscatter Van is a low-cost, highly mobile screening system built into a commercially available delivery van. The ZBV allows for immediate deployment in response to security threats, and its high throughput capability facilitates rapid inspections. The system's unique "drive-by" capability allows one or two operators to conduct X-ray imaging while the ZBV drives past suspect vehicles and objects. For personnel safety in dangerous environments, a remote console is available for operating the system in stationary mode from a distance of up to 500 meters.
