AS&E Receives $2.3M Follow-on Order for Multiple ZBVs from a Middle Eastern Country

(BILLERICA, Mass., July 5, 2006) -- American Science and Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASEI) (AS&E(R)), a leader in X-ray detection technology, announced today the receipt of a $2.3 million order from a Middle Eastern law enforcement agency for multiple Z(R) Backscatter(TM) Vans (ZBV).

"This latest order is the result of our heightened presence in the Middle East," said Anthony R. Fabiano, President and CEO of AS&E. "We have worked hard to demonstrate and communicate the unique benefits of Z Backscatter technology to detect terrorist threats. Our client's previous success with the ZBV has resulted in this follow-on order -- giving them added tools to enhance their inspection capability. The ZBV is ideal for law enforcement applications as it can easily be deployed and quickly maneuvered in high-threat situations."

A breakthrough in X-ray detection technology, AS&E's Z Backscatter Van is a low-cost, highly mobile screening system built into a commercially available delivery van. The ZBV allows for immediate deployment in response to security threats, and its high throughput capability facilitates rapid inspections. The system's unique "drive-by" capability allows one or two operators to conduct X-ray imaging while the ZBV drives past suspect vehicles and objects. For personnel safety in dangerous environments, a remote console is available for operating the system in stationary mode from a distance of up to 500 meters.
