A380 a GBP 26 Billion Boost for UK Manufacturing
The arrival of the A380 at Heathrow today marks a new landmark in the development of the world’s largest civil aircraft. The A380 programme has already generated GBP7.5 billion worth of work in the UK and this is likely to double to GBP15 billion during the life of the programme. When the value of the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines supplied to power the A380 are included, the total value of the aircraft to the UK aerospace industry could reach GBP26 billion.Dr Sally Howes, SBAC Director General said "The A380 is good news for UK manufacturing with the prospect of more than GBP26 billion of work during the lifetime of the programme. There are more than 400 UK companies involved in the A380 programme and it provides a marvellous example of the skill and innovation available within the UK aerospace industry."
The A380 is designed to minimise the impact on the environment. The economic fuel consumption of the A380 is around 13 per cent lower fuel burn than the current largest airliner. It will be the first long-haul aircraft to consume less than three litres of fuel per passenger over 100 kilometres, which represents fuel consumption similar to a small, turbo-diesel car. New generation engines and advanced wing and undercarriage design and technology ensure the 380 not only complies with current noise limits, but will be significantly quieter than today's largest airliner.
