AS&E Receives Order or Multiple Z Backscatter Van X-ray Systems

(BILLERICA, Mass., March 21, 2006) --American Science and Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASEI) (AS&E(R)), a leader in X-ray detection technology, announced today the receipt of a $1.9 million order from a client in the Asia Pacific region for multiple Z(R) Backscatter Vans(TM) (ZBV). The order includes operator training, service, and warranty. "Our international marketing efforts continue to yield positive results with a rapidly-expanding ZBV install base," said Anthony Fabiano, President and CEO. "The ZBV is proving its effectiveness in the field and our international clients are responding with additional purchase orders. This key Asia Pacific client will deploy multiple ZBVs at port and border crossings to combat trade fraud and detect contraband. Worldwide, ZBV orders are decisively fulfilling the requirements of various government agencies, including Customs and police agencies and military force protection." A breakthrough in X-ray detection technology, AS&E's Z Backscatter Van is a low-cost, highly mobile screening system built into a commercially available delivery van. The ZBV allows for immediate deployment in response to security threats, and its high throughput capability facilitates rapid inspections. The system's unique "drive-by" capability allows one or two operators to conduct X-ray imaging while the ZBV drives past suspect vehicles and objects. For personnel safety in dangerous environments, a remote console is available for operating the system in stationary mode from a distance of up to 500 meters.
