Global Military Augmented Reality Market

Military operations are becoming complex in nature, with most of the combats being carried out at unknown territories or urban terrains. Fighting in unknown territories demand enhanced level of situational awareness (SA). Military augmentation reality (MAR) is emerging as a befitting solution to get hold of overall situational awareness at the battlefield. Augmented reality technology provides a live view of real-world environment, augmented by digitally generated sensory inputs such as sounds, video, graphics, or GPS.

In military, use of augmented reality was first started in defense training, wherein a real war like environment is created for soldiers by using various digital simulations. Augmented reality has helped in reducing military training cost tremendously. In addition, Heads-Up Displays (HUDs) and Helmet Mounted Displays (HMDs) have also been used in military aerial vehicles since long time. HUDs and HMDs comprise display indicators which help in increasing pilot’s situational awareness and also improves safety. HUD generally include components like projector unit, combiner, display panel, and video generator.

Military augmented reality is utilised across various submarkets like, dismounted soldiers, land vehicles, naval vehicles and aerial vehicles. Of these submarkets, aerial vehicles contribute the maximum to MAR’s market share followed by dismounted soldiers. Lot of R&D activities are taking place to empower soldiers through advanced dismounted augmented reality technology. Companies are working on Google Glass-like smart augmented reality systems, which can be integrated into weapon control systems and are also expected to increase efficient communication between soldiers at different levels.

Considering the increasing complexity of defense combat operations, demand for military augmented reality applications is expected to grow in near future. According to a recent market research report published by Visiongain, “Military Augmented Reality (MAR) Technologies Market Report 2016-2026”, global market for military augmented reality is expected to reach $1,311.3 million in 2016 and it is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 16% over the next five years.

Major companies operating in military augmented reality include: Applied Research Associates (ARA), Rockwell Collins, Thales Group, Elbit Systems, BAE Systems, BANC3 Inc., Osterhout Design Group, Vuzix Corporation and Six15 Technologies.

Military augmented reality is primarily facing challenges associated with information overload and mobility. Information overload is impacting proper decision making ability of soldiers and in turn increasing the likelihood of making mistakes. Mobility challenges are majorly associated with higher weight and power requirements of augmented reality systems.
