Theodore Roosevelt Tests AFFF System
The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) completed Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) tests on the ship's flight deck and in the hangar bays, June 2.
AFFF is a mixture of 94 percent sea water and six percent AFFF concentrate primarily used for putting out class bravo fires. Class bravo fires feed on flammable liquids, such as JP-5 jet fuel.

The AFFF hoses used on the flight deck combat larger fires and extinguish them quickly, said Chief Aviation Boatswain's Mate Carl Dawson.
The AFFF testing is the first in many tests Theodore Roosevelt will have to complete INSURV.
INSURV takes place on all ships every three to six years to ensure the ship and its equipment are ready for combat status.
"Most ships only test their AFFF once or twice," said Dawson. "But to work out the bugs, we have tested ours five or six times to get ready for this one test."
A lot goes into getting the ship ready for AFFF testing. Keeping all the ship's systems operational requires numerous hours of preparation and maintenance.
"We go through a lot of discrepancy hits with the AFFF testing," said Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 1st Class Jeremy Bliss. "One of the spouts might work one testing cycle, and the next it may have something wrong with it."
The AFFF testing was a group effort that involved Sailors from multiple departments aboard TR.
"My guys have worked hard and put in a lot of time for this testing," said Bliss. "It is a great accomplishment to be able to check this off our list."
The AFFF system is one of many safety systems installed aboard Theodore Roosevelt. A properly working system is crucial to TR operating safely. Finishing this testing brings TR one step closer to being an effective forward presence.
