The building was damaged during the tragic shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, Sept. 16, 2013.
The scope of work for the renovations includes painting, carpeting and furniture, a new visitors' entrance to be constructed on the southern end of the historic building, to refresh the northeast employees' entrance, renovations to the existing cafeteria, and construction of an appropriate remembrance area inside the building. The two historical atriums will be enclosed with glass, as approved by the District of Columbia Historic Preservation Office.
The NAVSEA Headquarters building is approximately 650,000 square feet and is a historic federal facility with administrative and support spaces.
The renovations will provide employees a new sense of space and is anticipated to be completed in early 2015.
The approximately 3,000 Navy employees who work inside Building 197 are temporarily relocated at Buzzard Point, known as NAVSEA West.
