SDS Delivers Munitions Storage Virtual Trainer to the USAF
SDS International (SDS) recently completed delivery of the first-ever, state-of-the-art Munitions Storage Virtual Trainer (MSVT) to support the Conventional Munitions Maintenance Officer Course (CMOC) and the Nuclear Maintenance Officer Course (NMOC) taught at Sheppard Air Force Base (AFB), Texas.
SDS Advanced Technologies Division was contracted to provide a realistic training environment needed to support the preparation of Air Force Officers for the management and leadership duties they will face during conventional and nuclear munitions maintenance and storage operations. To that end, the delivered MSVT decision-skills training system has the flexibility and adaptability needed to support both the CMOC and NMOC in a capstone capacity to practice the students’ newly acquired skills while also providing the ability to exercise required decisions in a virtual training environment based upon the most current application used by Air Force Munitions Control personnel during normal operations.
UAV Flight Training And Simulation Market - Global Market Outlook (2016-2022)
The MSVT, which operates on commercial-off-the-shelf hardware, provides realistic, Artificially Intelligent (AI)-driven, real-world scenarios eliciting student inputs, actions and communications using intuitive interfaces that support student interactions from positions representative of what will be required of them in actual Munitions or Weapons Storage Areas (MSA/WSA). The MSVT system consists of a three-position commander/instructor station, nine student stations each capable of representing the key munitions storage functions, and a central large-screen display to support after-action-review. MSVT also consists of a central data management server that supports student input/control/reporting activities including normal AFMC2-based functions; a separate LIFE-based AI-Scenario Server that provides realistic AI-generated scenario and message traffic functions; and SDS’ LIFE-based AI-driven Scene Content generation system that provides behaviors/animations associated with all constructive 3D entities--human activities (individuals/teams, maintenance, convoys, security, etc.), vehicle movements and special effects--during typical conventional or nuclear weapons maintenance scenarios.
MSVT allows the instructor to effectively develop, control, monitor and update scenarios, including the ability to greatly enhance training realism by creating additional MSA/WSA sites using a dynamic MSA/WSA creation tool developed by SDS. It also allows the instructor to inject selected problems that realistically test the students’ decision making capabilities, and effectively role-play key, higher-level positions that students would normally be required to coordinate with during typical weapons scenarios. From the student’s perspective, the system ensures the actions of each student will affect the requirements and actions of the other students, and realistically interact with/affect both the AI-driven scenarios and the numerous individual AI-driven 3D entities within the virtual scene. Since scenarios often require the student to enter the virtual environment to locate/identify/resolve problems, MSVT includes highly-realistic and effective 3D representations of those MSA/WSA environments provided by SDS’ high-fidelity, AAcuity® PC-IG.
While the current MSVT system is focused on courses taught at Sheppard AFB, the system’s modular, adaptable architecture readily supports development and fielding of other munitions/weapons maintenance, storage and movement operations training systems. These could include decision skills training associated with base-level MSA/WSA and flight-line movement continuation training activities, or entry-level/continuation training associated with Minuteman weapons activities.
