Rockwell Collins Unveils New RealFires Constructive Simulation Environment

  • RealFires provides realistic targeting training with real-world gear, scenarios

Rockwell Collins today unveiled RealFires™, a new targeting training solution that uses both real and virtual environments to train users of Rockwell Collins’ leading-edge targeting technologies. The solution is being demonstrated at a customer open house this week at the Rockwell Collins Burgess Hill, UK, facility that specializes in simulation and training.

RealFires provides realistic day and night targeting simulation, with the flexibility to include a mix of live, artificial intelligence-based and programmed role players. The system is also capable of including remote role players in flying aircraft.

“Confidence, accuracy, situational awareness and the right equipment all come into play when a joint terminal attack controller is targeting for close air support,” said LeAnn Ridgeway, vice president and general manager, Simulation and Training Solutions for Rockwell Collins. “There is no margin for error, and our customers need the realistic training environment provided by RealFires to fully prepare the warfighter.”

The realism of RealFires is powered by Rockwell Collins’ FireStorm™ Integrated Targeting System,  CORE™ simulation architecture, Rosetta Joint Fires software suite data management solution, StrikeHawk™ video downlink receiver and DAGR (Defense Advanced GPS Receiver), along with other Rockwell Collins and sourced content. RealFires can be delivered in solutions ranging from a transportable desktop system to a 360-degree Rockwell Collins Griffin™ rear-projected dome display system.

The overwhelming majority of RealFires system components and linking technology are developed by Rockwell Collins, providing the company the ability to modify the source code and intellectual property needed to build and integrate the training system.

The demonstration taking place this week uses three 50-inch linked displays to provide a dramatic visual presentation of RealFires’ capabilities.
