Sonalysts Wins $20 M AF Contract for Satellite Operator Training System
Sonalysts, Inc., whose origins are in sonar analysis for the Submarine Force, continues to diversify into other lines of business with the award of a $17.1 million contract (with options to a total of $20.6 million) to develop a Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite operator training system for the Air Force Space Command.
The work, which is implemented through a modification that brings the total value of this Small Business Innovative Research contract to $39.5 million, will combine Sonalysts’ capabilities in computer games, satellite operations, and complex emulation, modeling, and simulation to produce a cost-effective training system for Air Force GPS satellite operators. It will be developed by nearly 30 software engineers and training experts from the company’s Waterford, Connecticut and Colorado Springs, Colorado offices. When completed in 2016, the new system will train satellite operators from the 50th Operations Support Squadron and 2nd Space Operations Squadron at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado and the 533rd Training Squadron at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.
The Global Military Simulation and Virtual Training Market 2015-2025
Sonalysts’ innovative training system design uses networked commercial-off-the-shelf personal computers integrated with an instructor control station to monitor the multiple student stations. The system will be easily configurable to support both individual and crew training. This is the fifth in a growing series of satellite operator training systems using software architecture developed by Sonalysts. The Air Force has estimated the potential cost savings from this innovative training approach at more than $100 million during the next five years. In addition, the common instructor capability of the system improves instructor efficiency while ensuring that student performance meets stringent Air Force training requirements.
Sonalysts’ Vice President Dan Bouchard is the program manager. As one of nearly 200 military veterans in the company, Mr. Bouchard understands the importance of providing the best possible training to men and women in uniform. Mr. Bouchard said, “We look forward to successfully delivering a cost-effective solution to the Air Force in these challenging and uncertain budgetary times. We will work closely with the Air Force Space Training Acquisition Office, the GPS OCX Program Directorate, as well as other members of our contractor team to help ensure the mission success of our nation’s GPS capability.” The Raytheon Company’s Intelligence & Information Systems Division from Aurora, Colorado is a subcontractor to Sonalysts on this contract.
