Rockwell Collins delivers its 20,000th air transport weather radar
- Company's latest airborne radar leverages more than 50 years of extensive research and development for enhanced safety and greater flight efficiency
Rockwell Collins achieved a significant milestone by delivering its 20,000th air transport weather radar system, which leverages more than 50 years of extensive research and development for enhanced safety and greater flight efficiency. United Airlines took delivery of the radar − Rockwell Collins’ award-winning and market-leading MultiScan™ Threat Detection System − on a new Next-Generation Boeing 737.
Rockwell Collins also announced today that United Airlines has selected MultiScan for 73 Next-Generation Boeing 737 aircraft. The selection includes Rockwell Collins’ full suite of communication, navigation and surveillance avionics. Deliveries will begin later this year.

The two companies recently marked today’s announcements during a ceremony at United’s Chicago O’Hare hub.

“United Airlines has a long history of embracing aircraft technology and was the first airline to use airborne weather radar in the flight deck,” said Dan O’Donnell, United’s director of flight technology. Capt. Joe Burns, United’s managing director of technology and flight test added, “Airborne weather radar allows us to make informed tactical decisions while maximizing constrained airspace.”
Rockwell Collins’ MultiScan Threat Detection System is a fully automatic airborne weather radar system that combines the latest weather science with advanced engineering concepts to identify and analyze thunderstorm cells, and display the actual weather threat. The end result is fewer flight diversions, which leads to lower fuel burn, and greater passenger comfort due to minimizing unexpected turbulent encounters.
All new Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Boeing 747-800s and Boeing Business Jets delivered today come standard equipped with Rockwell Collins’ MultiScan. The advanced radar system is also a selectable feature for other air transport aircraft, including Airbus A320s, A330s and A340s, and Boeing 777s and Next-Generation 737s.
