IAG nears order for Airbus jet: report

International Airlines Group is close to ordering the new Airbus A350 long-range passenger jet for its British Airways division, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

The paper, which cited two people familiar with the talks, said that the number of aircraft and the price was still under negotiation.

The discussions were focusing on the Airbus A350-1000 model, but the order could also include the smaller A350-900, according to the WSJ.

A spokeswoman for IAG, which also owns Spanish carrier Iberia, declined to comment on the report.

The deal for the wide-body A350 aircraft would represent a major win for Airbus parent EADS over its key US rival Boeing.

The WSJ added that Boeing had been trying to persuade IAG to buy a proposed update of its 777 model - dubbed the 777X - which is intended to compete with the Airbus A350.

The European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) is the parent of European airliner maker Airbus.

Back in February, meanwhile, IAG had revealed that it slumped into an annual net loss of 943 million euros ($1.2 billion) in 2012 on severe financial strains at Iberia and due to a soaring fuel bill.
