(Minneapolis and Rocket Center, W.Va., August 23, 2005) -- Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK) has received a production contract valued at approximately $15 million for M-228 Practice Grenade Fuzes. The contract was awarded through the U.S. Army Field Support Command, Rock Island, Illinois. If all options are exercised, the total value of the contract could be worth approximately $57 million. Work on the contract will be performed at the company’s Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in Rocket Center, W.Va.

ATK is an industry leader in the design, development and production of fuzes for gun projectiles, bombs, and other ordnance systems. The fuze for the M-228 practice grenade will allow the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps to properly train their warfighters in the use of currently fielded grenades. This fuze will allow for a time delay before detonation to replicate actual combat applications. This training device will be used in the re-useable training grenade body.

The M-228 Practice Grenade Fuze will be manufactured on a new, highly automated production line that will be operational by March 2006. This production line will incorporate automated manufacturing techniques for consistent, high-quality, low cost production.
ATK is a $3.1 billion advanced weapon and space systems company employing approximately 14,500 people in 23 states.
