Nine dead in Peru plane crash: police

Nine people were killed Wednesday in the crash of a small plane carrying mining company personnel in northwestern Peru, a regional police chief told AFP.

"Seven passengers and two crew members died in the accident, which was due to bad weather and their getting hung up in a high-tension cable," said Colonel Roger Torres Mendoza, the police chief of La Libertad region.

The plane's wreckage was located in a ravine alongside a highway in the northwestern region.

The passengers were workers for a Peruvian mining company, Marsa, which owns a gold mine in the region.
