Dr. Jared Freeman Named Chief Scientist of Aptima
Aptima, Inc. announced today that Jared Freeman, Ph.D., has been named Chief Scientist effective January 1.
Dr. Freeman joined Aptima in 1999 and most recently served as the company’s Chief Research Officer. In this role he was instrumental in the company’s growth and managed Aptima’s successful entry into the big data analytics market.
As Chief Scientist, Dr. Freeman manages the direction and quality of research and development at Aptima. Dr. Freeman is also actively involved in the company’s research and development contracts. He has extensive experience investigating problem solving by individuals and teams in real-world settings and has served as a Principle Investigator on a range of projects that include the development of decision aids, training content and systems, measures of human performance and communications, feedback technologies, and computational models of military organizations.
Dr. Freeman is founding member of Aptima’s Institutional Review Board. He has served continuously since the Board was founded in 2002, first as the Board’s Chair from 2002 to December 2012, and as the Board’s Institutional Official starting on January 1 of this year. Dr. Freeman is also the Industry Conference Chair for the National Defense Industry Association’s Human Systems Division 2013 Conference. This will be the first national conference for the Division, which engages government and industry S&T leaders concerned with human-centered engineering. Dr. Freeman is a Contributing Editor to Human Factors, the journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.
Prior to joining Aptima, Dr. Freeman was a Scientist at Cognitive Technologies, where he developed a highly automated method of assessing and training the tactical skills of Navy and Army officers. He previously consulted to Bell Labs, conducting research and training about the complex team process of debugging large software systems.
Dr. Freeman is the author of more than 120 articles, book chapters, and conference presentations concerning these and related topics. He holds a Ph.D. in Human Learning and Cognition from Columbia University and a M.A. in Educational Technology from Teachers College, Columbia University. He is a member of the Cognitive Science Society.
