CAE and APS to open location in Texas, USA
- To provide upset prevention and recovery training for business and commercial aircraft pilots
- Comprehensive academic, on-aircraft and simulator program addresses Loss of Control - In-flight situations
CAE, a world leader in aviation training, and Aviation Performance Solutions (APS), a world leader in loss of control in-flight mitigation training, today announced on the eve of the National Business Aircraft Association (NBAA) annual convention an extension of their partnership to provide a comprehensive Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) program for business and commercial aircraft pilots. The program uses proven web-based academics, in-flight practical skill development and full-flight simulator exercises and scenarios.
The in-flight program will be conducted beginning in the spring of 2013 at the Arlington Municipal Airport in Arlington, Texas, in the United States and will use an Extra 300L aerobatic aircraft. Simulator training will be delivered at the CAE SimuFlite training center, located nearby at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. The web-based e-Learning academic program is a CAE and APS collaboration based on the Airplane Upset Recovery Training Aid (AURTA), Revision 2.

The UPRT program is designed to help pilots reduce the threat of Loss of Control In-flight (LOC-I) situations. LOC-I is defined as flight that occurs outside of the normal flight envelope with an inability of the pilot to control the aircraft. LOC-I is the number one cause of fatalities in commercial and general aviation.
"Typical business aviation and airline flight training programs do not thoroughly teach pilots the aerodynamics pertinent to upset situations or many other undesired aircraft states," said Paul BJ Ransbury, President of APS, who has been both a fighter pilot and commercial airline pilot. "Unless a pilot has experienced the psychophysiological conditions, cueing and the disorientation of a sudden, unexpected aircraft upset event, they may not be prepared to handle it properly. The good news is APS teaches simple, useful techniques which can apply to most fixed-wing aircraft so the pilot or crew can enhance their ability to effectively recover the airplane."
Among the conditions addressed in the CAE-APS training program are severe attitude situations such as overbank, stalls, incipient spins, spiral dive, nose high, nose low, control failures, and wake turbulence encounters, as well as a range of other emergency situations.
"The program addresses the fundamental principles of all flight attitudes and is applicable to all pilot experience levels flying fixed-wing airplanes - turboprop or jet, straight or swept wing, any size and weight," said Captain Lou Nemeth, CAE's Chief Safety Officer. "Pilots who have been through this training have repeatedly called it some of the most valuable manual flying training they have ever received."
CAE clients will be able to coordinate the UPRT component along with their Initial and Recurrent training programs, enabling them to do the entire program in one visit to the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
