Pilot killed in crash of Romanian military jet: ministry

A Romanian army jet crashed Thursday on a training flight, killing the pilot while the instructor was able to eject from the aircraft before impact, the defence ministry said.

"The plane was on a training flight and crashed shortly after take-off, about 500 metres (yards) north of the runway..." at the Craiova airport in the south of the country, the ministry said in a statement.

"The pilot was killed on impact," the ministry said, adding that the flight instructor managed to eject from the aircraft and was taken away in an ambulance.

"The weather conditions were rather good," an official at Craiova airport, Adrian Predescu, told Realitatea TV.

The defence ministry has set up an inquiry commission to look into what caused the accident.
