Five dead in firefighting helicopter crash in Turkey: report

A firefighting helicopter crashed near the south-west coast of Turkey on Thursday, killing its five-member crew, the private NTV television network reported.

The helicopter was fighting a forest fire in the city of Fethiye, a holiday destination particularly popular with Britons.

NTV, quoting eyewitnesses, said the helicopter crashed in the area's rugged terrain as it carried water to put out the blaze.

Summer wildfires fires are common in Turkey, particularly on the western coast, where there are large areas of forest. Helicopters play a key role in fighting the flames.
