ESSP and Austro Control sign an EGNOS Working Agreement
- This agreement enables the publication of the first EGNOS-based approach procedures in Austria
Last June 14th, ESSP President Dirk Werquin officially signed an EGNOS Working Agreement with the Austrian ANSP Austro Control, as a key step for the implementation of EGNOS-based approach procedures (LPV procedures) in this country.
The signature was completed during the EGNOS Service Provision Workshop 2012 that took place in Madrid that same day: the key EGNOS annual meeting organized by ESSP that gathers together the main EGNOS stakeholders (ANSPs, NSAs, airlines and industry) in order to network and exchange information on the EGNOS services status, main achievements and future challenges.
EGNOS Safety -of- Life Service for Aviation
Since March 2nd 2011 the EGNOS Safety-of-Life Service is available for Aviation, so European Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) can start the processes required for the implementation of EGNOS-based services, in particular vertically guided approach procedures based on EGNOS (LPV procedures or RNAV GNSS approaches to LPV minima).
“The use of EGNOS for LPV approach procedures is already a reality in Europe” Mr. Werquin said, “and we, as the EGNOS Service provider, are proud that Austria is also on its way –as other European countries like France, Switzerland, Germany and UK - to benefit from the EGNOS Safety-of-Life Service, improving safety, accessibility and efficiency to operators, pilots and airports in this country”.
“We are pleased to start using the extensive innovative potential of EGNOS by being an early user of this SBAS service in Europe”, said Andreas Schallgruber, Head of ATM Operations at Austro Control. “In providing SBAS procedures for the benefit of our airspace users we will add to our excellent service levels and customer relations. The first two LPV procedures are planned for the airports of Graz and Linz with implementation scheduled for the end of 2013”, he concluded.
