Small plane crashes in California front yard

Hundreds of homeowners remained without power Tuesday after a light aircraft crashed onto a residential street in California, ending upside down in front of someone's home.

The crash occurred late Monday in Glendale, just outside Los Angeles, when the single-engined Cessna heading to nearby Van Nuys Airport crashed, downing power lines.

The pilot suffered only minor injuries, but traffic lights in the area went off immediately, and electricity was cut to some 2,000 homes. By Tuesday morning some 200 remained without power.

The Cessna P210 reportedly suffered mechanical problems and was trying to divert to nearby Bob Hope airport in Burbank, said Glendale police spokesman Tom Lorenz.

Air traffic controllers reported that the aircraft had disappeared from radar about three miles from Bob Hope airport, said Lorenz, adding: "Then we started getting phone calls."

The pilot, who was crawling out of the plane when rescuers arrived, complained of pains in his arm, shoulder and back. He was treated at a hospital and released, said a Glendale fire department spokesman.
