Kick-off of 1st ESTC Project for New Airborne Datalink System Begins
Signalling an increased interest among European operators for Airborne Datalink Systems that will accommodate upcoming mandates, the first installation and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Supplemental Type Certificate (ESTC) approval for Universal Avionics’ new UniLink UL-800/801 Communications Management system is now underway.
The aircraft, a Bombardier Challenger CL-601 based in Switzerland, operates worldwide with frequent flights to the U.S across the North Atlantic Tracks where the Future Air Navigation System (FANS) is being implemented. Universal Avionics’ UniLink UL-80X Airborne Datalink System is developed in full compliance with FANS 1/A+ standards, and meets the installation component required for the aircraft operator to seek FANS operational approval. Aircraft operators approved for FANS benefit from an exception clause in the Implemented Rule under EUROCONTROL’s Link2000+ Programme that allows aircraft with an initial individual airworthiness certificate issued before January 1, 2014 and approved for FANS to be exempted from the provisions of that mandate.
UniLink will accommodate the expansion of datalink services into more streamlined applications of airline and air traffic operations. The UL-800/801 interfaces with Universal Avionics’ current FMS product line with either 4” or 5” Control Display Units. For increased versatility, UL-801 includes an internal VHF Data Radio (VDR). The UL-801’s internal VDR saves weight, space, and the installation of an external VDR. The UL-801 may transmit and receive data via VDR or SATCOM depending upon geographic location, reducing operational costs substantially.
