Curtiss-Wright Controls, Inc. today announced that it has completed delivery under a contract from Embraer to provide rugged data acquisition and recorder technology for use on the Legacy 500 business jet aircraft. Curtiss-Wright Controls Avionics & Electronics (CWC-AE) delivered its Acra KAM-500, Acra multi-role recorder, and Acra network switch subsystems to Embraer for use on the Legacy 500 network FAA certification program. The test aircraft for the Legacy 500 network FAA certification program was rolled out on December 23, 2011. It is currently preparing for flight testing and the first test flight is expected to take place in third quarter of 2012. The contract for the flight testing phase of the program was valued at $5 million. Shipments of equipment sets for flight certification were completed in December, 2011.
Embraer’s move from traditional Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) to Ethernet-based technology prompted an examination of best-in-class systems available worldwide. Embraer selected Curtiss-Wright Controls’ technology for use on its first Ethernet flight certification program so it can provide the FAA with performance results from dual Ethernet and PCM data streams.

After an extensive evaluation, Embraer’s team selected CWC-AE’s Acra product line, a significant achievement for Curtiss-Wright Controls in that its data acquisition and data recorder systems replace a solution Embraer sourced from an existing supplier for over 15 years. The move to modern data acquisition and data recorder systems will enable Embraer to record all network data and respond to any engine, avionics, or other issues more quickly than was possible previously.
