DRS Launches Smallest and Lowest Power Mid-Wave IR Camera Core to Original Equipment Manufacturers
DRS Technologies, Inc., a Finmeccanica Company, announces that its Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition (RSTA) Group has introduced its ZafiroTM640 Micro infrared camera core, making it the smallest, lowest-power mid-wave infrared sensor device available for the first time to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Developed and manufactured by RSTA, the ZafiroTM640 Micro weighs less than 0.9 pounds and requires only 5 watts of steady-state power at room temperature. With its compact size and industry-leading cooler design, the ZafiroTM640 Micro brings cooled infrared technology to the most space-restricted applications. Because the ZafiroTM640 Micro detects heat rather than light, it is capable of creating large, crystal-clear 640 x 480 pixel images through rain, smoke, dust, haze, light fog and the dark of night.

The compact ZafiroTM640 Micro is the latest in RSTA’s line of cooled, mid-wave products that was launched in January 2012 with the introduction of the ZafiroTM640. Incorporated in several of RSTA’s products, the integrated Dewar cooler assembly (IDCA) used in the ZafiroTM640 Micro employs a 12-micron pitch, cooled mid-wave detector to provide sharp images in a small, lightweight package.
DRS’ quiet, long-life cooler is designed to run for 12,000 hours on average without failure, which is significantly longer than competing small coolers. In addition, the DRS Technologies’ cooler produces less vibration and noise than competing cryogenic coolers, and its very small size allows the entire camera core, including electronics, to be configured in a package of approximately 2 x 2 x 2 inches. The camera core electronics provide non-uniformity correction, local area processing, and Camera Link® and NTSC video outputs.
Expanding RSTA’s line of cooled infrared sensors, the ZafiroTM640 Micro is one of the first cooled products that RSTA has offered to the marketplace as a merchant supplier. It can be incorporated by OEMs, with their own lenses, into a broad array of applications including handheld and battery-powered devices, gimbal payloads, and systems for concealed surveillance. Upon request, DRS can perform this work for the OEM, providing a fully integrated camera solution.
“OEMs will be able to take advantage of RSTA’s most sophisticated and compact technology when they integrate the ZafiroTM640 Micro thermal camera core into their products,” said RSTA President Terry Murphy. “For nearly half a century, RSTA has developed compact infrared detection technology for America’s Warfighters. Now, similar technology is available to original equipment manufacturers battling for a significant competitive edge in the marketplace.”
