Delta jet in emergency landing at Dublin airport
A Delta Airlines passenger jet made an emergency landing at Dublin airport on Monday after the pilot reported a suspicious object, but Irish police found nothing on board, officials said.
The 767-300 aircraft was on route from Istanbul in Turkey to New York's JFK airport with over 200 passengers plus crew on board when the pilot sought permission to land in Dublin.
"The pilot requested an emergency landing because he apparently was concerned with something that had been found on board," a spokeswoman for Dublin Airport Authority told AFP.
When the aircraft landed at about 3:45 pm (1445 GMT) it was met by the airport emergency fire service and taken to a remote location at the airfield, the spokeswoman said.
"The passengers all remained on board. The Gardai (Irish police) went on board and spoke with the pilot," she added.
"The emergency was stood down. I understand that the Gardai are quite satisfied that there is nothing untoward."
The incident came just hours after a Virgin Atlantic jet bound for Orlando in the United States made an emergency landing at Britain's Gatwick airport because of a fire on board.
