Sports plane crashes in Serbia, two dead: police

BELGRADE - A sports plane crashed near a civilian airport in central Serbia on Wednesday, killing the pilot and a co-pilot, police said in a statement.

A sports plane belonging to a local flying club crashed on the bank of the Morava river near the village of Medvedja shortly after take-off, police official Prvoslav Vidanovic said.

The pilot died immediatelly while a co-pilot died of his injuries shortly afterwards, he added.

An investigation has been launched, with evidence gathered so far suggesting the plane had hit power cables, Vidanovic said.

This is the second incident involving sports and small planes since September 2010, when two people were also killed in a crash.
