Airborne International establishes Spanish RTM center

  • Airborne International's new facility in Girona, Spain, emphasizes resin-transfer molding, cleanrooms, oven, autoclave, CNC machining equipment and design offices.
Airborne International (The Hague, The Netherlands) reports it established a dedicated facility for resin transfer molding (RTM) in aerospace in Girona, Spain. The existing business unit of Airborne Composites in Spain will move to a new facility with state-of-the-art RTM equipment, cleanrooms, oven, autoclave, CNC milling equipment and design offices.

The investment plan is supported by local Catalan and national Spanish entities, to establish long-term and high-tech employment in the fast growing sector of composites for the aerospace market. The location is strategically located in the north east region of Spain with less than three hours driving distance from the headquarters of Airbus in Toulouse, France.

Airborne was established in Spain in early 2008 and is currently working for Airbus and Eurocopter in both RTM processing as well as prepreg autoclave technology. The company is EN 9100 qualified and has its own design, stress and process engineering capability.

In cooperation with the Airborne Technology Centre in The Netherlands, improved technologies for RTM manufacturing are developed: pick and place of dry preforms by robots, pick and drape, dry fiber placement and fast injection systems. The new site will be in operation as of January 2012.
