Thales Sets Benchmark for 3D Interactive Maintenance Training for Type 45 Destroyer
This flexible, interactive 3D training media provides a cost-effective alternative to training on costly part-task trainers. It has been designed to allow maintenance training to be done as either instructor-led, computer-aided instruction or self-paced, computer-based training. In both modes the maintainer can interact with photo-realistic, animated 3D models of cabinets and equipment to work through sequences of learning that cover start-up/shut-down, remove/install and fault finding.

This project, under contract with BAE Systems Insyte, has provided SCORM1 conformant, web-enabled, 3D training media for the use of Type 45 maintainer trainers.
The LRR media development contract followed an initial contract for the provision of 3D training media for the RESM2 and medium-frequency sonar systems. This was the first training material of its type to be accepted by the RN. All the media has now been integrated within training courses being run at HMS Collingwood. The eventual aim is for the training to be delivered over the UK Defence Learning Portal.
Lt Cdr Paul Diver, the Defence Equipment & Support Training Solutions project manager for Type 45, says: "Thales has impressed us all with the quality and originality of the 3D media that it has developed for inclusion in the courseware being produced at the RN's technology based training unit at HMS Collingwood. This new approach to maintenance training solutions is proving to be very effective and versatile, as well as cost-effective through- life from a training standpoint."
Marion Broughton, head of Thales UK's training and simulation business, says: "The tremendous success of this second contract is a testament to Thales UK's innovative work in the field of 3D training media. The company continues to set the benchmark for the development of maintenance training assets within the Royal Navy."
1 SCORM=sharable content object reference model. SCORM is a collection of standards and specifications for web-based e-learning. It defines communications between client side content and a host system called the run-time environment, which is commonly supported by a learning management system.
2 RESM=radar electronic support measures. It provides situational awareness, threat warning and intelligence gathering capabilities.
