Meggitt Awarded Contract to Supply Targetry for British ArmySuwanee, GA - The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded Meggitt Training Systems, Inc. of Suwanee, GA a GBP10M ($16M) contract to meet an enhanced targetry requirement for the British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS) in Alberta, Canada. This is the Army's premier live-fire range for operational pre-deployment training, which is changing to reflect the complexity of modern combat. BATUS is unique in scope and size (an area slightly larger than Luxembourg) and is the ultimate testing ground for the British Army preparing for Afghanistan and other demanding conflicts.
This highly competitive tender is the culmination of an extensive period of engagement with the MoD, during which Meggitt Training Systems identified the best value solution to the unique and extreme environmental requirements of the vast BATUS prairie. This multi-million dollar contract, some 40 years after the British Army started training there, will modernize all targetry. The modernization effort includes over 1,000 light and heavy deployable smart targets, near miss sensing systems to assess the effectiveness of suppressive fire and battle effects simulators, providing a customized after action review system.
Global Military Simulation and Virtual Training Market 2014-2018
Ronald Vadas, President of Meggitt Training Systems, commented: "This is a very exciting opportunity for us and we are delighted to receive this contract so quickly after being selected as Preferred Bidder. Supplying best in class targetry for the British Army's most important live-fire range is a natural follow-on to our position in the US military live-fire market. The UK Ministry of Defence is already one of our most important strategic customers for virtual training, so I am particularly pleased that we will be able to extend the relationship to include our next generation of live-fire targetry."
