The new Defence helicopter, the NH90, successfully completed its first night flights using night vision equipment. The flights were conducted from De Kooy Naval Air Station in Den Helder on 8 March.
A total of 20 NH90s will be delivered before 2012. The first 12 NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopters will be stationed with 860 Squadron at De Kooy Naval Air Station. They will be deployed for maritime combat and amphibious tasks from navy ships and for tactical transport. They will also be on stand-by for Search and Rescue operations.
The other 8 helicopters are so-called NH90 Transport NATO Frigate Helicopters (TNFH). These will be stationed at Gilze-Rijen Air Base with 300 Squadron of the Royal Netherlands Air Force and will be deployed for transport tasks.
The multipurpose NH90s will eventually replace both the Lynx maritime helicopters and the AB-412 rescue helicopters.
