SELEX Galileo, a Finmeccanica Company, has been awarded contracts worth in excess of 33M EUR for the supply of 196 high-energy lasers to be fitted in United States prime contractor targeting systems. Acting as rangefinders and designators, the lasers allow fighter aircraft crews to target the enemy with exacting precision while remaining outside the range of hostile fire.
Alastair Morrison, SVP for Radar and Advanced Targeting, said "SELEX Galileo is a market leader in high-energy lasers. The Company has a proven track record in manufacturing and delivering cutting-edge laser systems to the demanding specifications of major international customers. These contracts recognise not only our high level of technological expertise, but also the trust our customers place in us to deliver the most affordable and cost effective solution."
SELEX Galileo operates a laser centre of excellence in Edinburgh, UK, and has sold more than 4,500 lasers for programmes in over 25 countries with integration complete on some 40 platforms across air, land and ea. The Company's Edinburgh site employs around 2000 people and takes a leading role in the Scottish defence industry, both with its laser products as well as technologies such as AESA radar.
