DRS Delivers 1000th Airborne Pod for P5 Combat Training SystemBethesda, Md. - DRS Defense Solutions, LLC announced that its Training and Control Systems, a business unit of DRS Defense Solutions, has delivered the 1000th airborne pod for the P5 Combat Training System/Tactical Combat Training System (P5CTS/TCTS) from its Fort Walton Beach, FL, facility.
The P5CTS/TCTS, was awarded in 2003 by the Range Instrumentation Systems Branch of the Test and Training Division at Eglin Air Force Base, FL, to Cubic Defense Applications of San Diego, CA, as the prime contractor. As the principal subcontractor to Cubic for the airborne instrumentation, DRS TCS has received orders valued at more than $210 million for P5 pods with deliveries scheduled through FY2012.

The P5 CTS/TCTS enables combat pilots to train as they fight by allowing the aircraft to fly, maneuver, engage and strike at ground and air targets with a wide variety of simulated weapons with immediate feedback to the pilot in flight.
The P5 pod is mounted to any AIM-9 or AMRAAM launch rail and provides continuous and precise tracking of all P5 equipped participants throughout a training mission, advanced security features, no drop weapons scoring and real-time air-to-air "kill" notifications.
In addition, the pod records a variety of flight and aircrew performance data for review during flight debriefs and has live monitoring features to allow real-time feedback, direction and instruction from ground based observers or instructors.
P5 CTS/TCTS is the U.S. military program of record for live air combat training instrumentation, allowing the U.S. Navy, Marines, and Air Force to train together using a common platform. The P5 has also been provided to international customers through the Foreign Military Sales program, providing the capability for joint and coalition training around the world.
To date, the system and it associated pods have been fielded at 18 operational U.S. Navy, Marine and Air Force sites in the CONUS and to FMS customers, with the first US military overseas locations scheduled to receive P5 later this year.
Mr. Robbie Epstein, president of DRS Training and Control Systems: "This 1000th P5 pod delivery is a significant achievement for the company as well as the program. The P5 pod represents the fifth generation of airborne combat training systems and requires state-of-the-art engineering, manufacturing, testing, and depot level maintenance capabilities to support the rigorous training needs of U.S. and coalition aircrews around the world."
"DRS TCS has dedicated significant resources to the program," Epstein added. "This includes modern production and depot repair areas, and sophisticated environmental test equipment to assure the system can operate and survive in the harsh, demanding environment of modern air combat training."
