DRS Sonar Systems Awarded $9.7 M Contract

  • to Provide Towed Active Subsystem for Integration into Variable Depth Sonar for Littoral Combat Ship
(Gaithersburg, MD., August 25, 2010) -- DRS Sonar Systems, LLC. announced today that it was awarded a $9.7 million contract to provide a Towed Active Subsystem that will be integrated into a Variable Depth Sonar (VDS) Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) system for use on a Littoral Combat Ship. The LCS VDS Advanced Development Model (ADM) is planned to undergo a sea test in FY12.

The LCS VDS will detect submerged submarines off the littoral as well as in deep water. The low frequency sonar provides a high search rate tactical anti-submarine warfare capability in a compact, highly survivable package.

"We are providing the U.S. Navy key elements of an ASW system that will ensure battle space dominance well into the 21st century," said Wayne Jakubowski, DRS Sonar Systems president. "The Towed Active Subsystem that DRS Sonar Systems provides is perfectly suited for the war fighting demands of the Littoral Combat Ship. We are pleased to be a partner with PEO IWS-5A and NUWC in the testing of such a superior ASW system."

The firm, fixed price contract, let by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport, RI, includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to $12.7 million.
