EADS DS to Increase the Efficiency of Helicopter Missions

  • Operations support system ensuring both mission and logistic support planning for Tiger and NH90 helicopters
Green light for training operations

(February 8, 2010) -- In future, the German Armed Forces will operate their helicopter fleet using a standardised operations support system which not only enables operational readiness to be increased, but also permits operating costs to be reduced. A corresponding series production contract has been awarded to EADS Defence & Security (DS) by the German Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB).

The EUA/OSS (EUA = Einsatzunterstutzungsanlage, OSS = Operations Support System) developed by Defence Electronics (DE), an integrated activity of DS, combine operational command and control with technical and logistic support for helicopters. With the present contract, DE now supports two types of helicopters used by the German Armed Forces: the Tiger combat helicopter and the NH90 transport helicopter. The scalable IT system of the EUA/OSS makes it possible to plan missions based on tactical and logistic data, thereby increasing the accuracy of flight preparation. The EUA/OSS also enhances the operational efficiency and improves the deployment capabilities of helicopter squadrons, above all in operations abroad, while at the same time lowering operating costs.

"We adapt our software development to the Bundeswehr's requirements both in the tactical & operational areas as well as in the area of the technical & logistic capabilities," says DE CEO Bernd Wenzler. "The series production contract which has now been signed ensures that, in a first step, full training can be carried out for the Tiger support helicopters at the Bundeswehr locations of Fritzlar, Fassberg and Le Luc in southern France, as well as for the NH90 in Fassberg and Holzdorf from 2010."
