ATK Dedicates Innovation Center for Energy and Aerospace at Ronkonkoma

  • ATK Applies Innovation Expertise for Potential Energy Industry Solutions
ATK's New Center for Energy and Aerospace Innovation is Developing Technology Solutions for Conversion, Storage, and Distribution of Clean Energy

(Minneapolis, January 6, 2010) -- Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK) formally dedicated its new Center for Energy and Aerospace Innovation (CEAI) in a recent ceremony at their Ronkonkoma, New York facility. CEAI will serve as an ATK focal point for applying the company's innovation expertise into potential breakthrough technologies for the energy industry. The CEAI is located within ATK's General Applied Science Laboratories (GASL) which is an ATK research and test facility.

The Center's long-term vision is to deliver innovative and affordable technology solutions that help to ensure reliable and environmentally friendly sources of energy. CEAI was established to explore new ways to produce clean energy, enhance production from renewable resources, and improve methods for energy storage, distribution, and delivery with minimal impact to the environment.

"ATK delivers affordable innovation to customers," said Bart Olson, Vice President and General Manager, ATK Tactical Propulsion and Controls Division. "As we look to the challenges facing our country in finding, producing and distributing renewable energy from sources that are environmentally friendly, we believe ATK can offer proven and innovative technologies as potential solutions."

The GASL facility has a 50-year heritage in developing advanced propulsion for the aerospace and defense markets. The capabilities ATK has developed for the aerospace industry have potential applications in the energy industry to address conversion, storage and mobility challenges. As an example, in the 1970's, ATK developed the concept of lean, premixed combustion for gas turbines that resulted in significant reductions in pollution emissions. In the 1980's, the Department of Energy (DOE) funded work at the GASL facility related to coal gasification. Other technology applications ATK is developing include:

-- Micro power sources
-- Distributed power generation from biomass and waste
-- Hydrogen storage technology
-- Portable and mobile electric power generating technology
-- Energy harvesting and scavenging from natural sources
-- Fuel reformation for clean and efficient power systems
-- Fuel efficient vehicle architectures
-- Synthetic fuels for aerospace vehicles
