Arrius-Equipped Ka-226T Among the Best in Class for Safety and Emissions

(Moscow, December 7, 2009) -- Kumertau Aviation Production Enterprise (KumAPE) has completed tests of a Ka-226T fitted with Turbomeca engines. The model uses French Arrius 2G turboshafts and a Russian VR-226N gearbox.

This is the first time an Arrius 2G is installed on a coaxial helicopter. Unprecedented safety is achieved even with one engine out, with up to 750 hp available for maneuvering. The combination of modern engines, an accident-proof fuel system, and shock-absorbing AK-2000 seats produced by RD&PE Zvezda, make this helicopter one of the safest and most eco-friendly in its class.

Tests of the Ka-226T have confirmed the outstanding flight structure, altitude and maneuvering characteristics. The 7500 m operating ceiling, exceptional for a light helicopter, is yet another unique achievement of the Ka-226T.

Unrivaled performance of the Ka-226T makes it a helicopter of choice in mountainous terrains and hot climates, over water, in windy conditions, and in urban high-rise operations.

Russian Helicopters COO Andrei Shibitov says that "many countries have already highly appraised the unique economic and operating capabilities of Russian helicopters and have a need for such rotorcraft. We expect the light universal Ka-226T to be in high demand on the global market."

Sergey Mikrukov, Managing Director of KumAPE, stated that "the Ka-226T has an advantage over similar-classed helicopters in that it is easier to pilot, has a lower level of vibrations and is more reliable and robust. This makes it highly competitive."

The Ka-226T has a MTOW of 4 tons with a payload of 1.45 tons. Its max speed is 230 km/h. It can take up to 9 people including two pilots. With 10-minute emergency reserves max flight time is 3.3 hours and range is 525 km.

Separate cabin modules allow using the same helicopter for transportation, patrol, construction, medevac, firefighting, search & rescue, and evacuation without handicapping technical and economic performance.

Testing is due to be finished and the helicopter to enter mass production in 2011. The Ka-226T is currently competing in the large Indian light helicopter tender.
