(Roma, November 9, 2009) -- SELEX Sistemi Integrati, a Finmeccanica company, was awarded a contract worth EUR 83 million in its role as the head of a temporary consortium of companies with SAAB Microwave SA to supply the Italian Ministry of Defence - Teledife (the Italian General Directorate of Telecommunications, IT and Advanced Technologies) - with five firefinder radar systems and associated logistics support.
The entire order will be delivered within 36 months of the contract being signed and coming into force. The contract also covers the provision of training for operators, as well as installation and system management support.
As the Company heading up the order, and due to its expertise as a systems integrator, SELEX Sistemi Integrati will be responsible for overseeing the entire project. The Company will carry out the integration of the Arthur radars from SAAB Microwave with the SIACCON command and control systems previously supplied to the Italian Army. SELEX Sistemi Integrati will also perform modifications to the radar equipment and will supply all navigation and communication devices, as well as ensuring the mobility of the system.
Firefinder radars are battlefield surveillance systems that protect units on operations. The systems are able to identify sources of enemy fire and respond quickly, even in adverse weather conditions, due to the ease of data recording and deployment and good mobility in the field. All information gathered is transmitted to a dedicated command and control centre for co-ordinating the mission. Moreover, the systems can co-operate with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and are suitable for integration with NATO command and control systems.
The firefinder systems supplied by SELEX Sistemi Integrati will help the Italian defence administration to meet the increasing international responsibilities it has assumed during recent years. The systems will be used on out-of-area missions and will allow the Italian Armed Forces to work in greater safety.
