Six Italian soldiers killed in Kabul attack: minister

ROME, Sept 17, 2009 (AFP) - Six Italian soldiers were killed and another three wounded in a suicide bomb attack on Thursday in the Afghan capital Kabul, Defence Minister Ignazio La Russa said.

Ten Italian paratroopers were riding in two armoured vehicles when the suicide bomber, apparently in a white Toyota vehicle, struck, he said.

"Sadly I must confirm the loss of six human lives from the parachute regiment," La Russa said in a statement to the Senate.

Italy's lower House of Parliament held a one-minute silence in memory of the soldiers while Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi addressed condolences to their families.

Italy has 3,250 troops in Afghanistan.
